While having dinner a few weeks ago with my editor friend, Leslie, I told her about the impromptu concert my dad gave to residents on his floor the night before. Still awed by what I’d witnessed, I explained how his passion for music impacted a woman who suffers from dementia. I couldn’t hide my excitement as I described how his big heart and booming voice were transforming the retirement community he now calls home.
Leslie thought the story would be perfect for her client’s website. She was working with them to prepare a bank of articles around the healing power of the arts. My dad’s story would demonstrate music’s potential to restore a measure of health to the elderly.
I wrote the story the next day, and it was published at Ford Better World yesterday. I can’t wait for you to read it here.
Secret to a long life
My sisters and I have often said my dad’s passion for music is what has kept him alive. That is true in part. On a deeper level, I think his longevity is fueled by the joy he feels when he brings joy to others.
A cheerful disposition is good for your health;
gloom and doom leave you bone-tired.
Proverbs 17:22 (MSG)
Last week one of my dad’s aides told my sister that the retirement facility hasn’t been the same since he moved in. She said he has “lit up” the entire community with his warmth, his joy and his music.
It seems his cheerful disposition is good, not only for his health, but for the health of those around him.

Uncle Joe is a amazing man. His music and voice is beautiful and he has the kindest heart.
He amazes us, too, Adeline. Every time we think he’s down for the count, he finds the strength to get back up and keep going. My sisters and I are grateful for the blessing it is to have a father like him.
Your Dad has a special gift with his singing and bringing people together. I’ve always believed what you can’t communicate verbally, there’s always a song that will. To this day, our kids still talk about the wonderful holidays we had with your Dad and his singing. He is a blessing to all of us.
You’re so right, Judi. When you think about it, music has been a huge part of the connection our families share.
Joann, your father is a blessing to have here at Maple Heights. He fills the community with smiles daily.
Thank you, Rachel. He loves you all, and we appreciate so much how you have welcomed him and care so well for him.
